Abstract:
"What’s a crime? Crimes are unforeseeable and are legal offense that can be committed through an act or omission and is penalized by law. Grave crime which is a subsection of a crime are heinous offenses that are subject to either the death penalty or life in prison in the trial.
A criminal Modus Operandi (MO) is a term used for an operating system or a pattern of illegal activity that is recognizable that it may be used to link the same perpetrator to other crimes. MO is a key factor in identifying possible suspects based on how the crime was organized based on location, how it took place, tools used, and method of escape.
However, considering the current situation of the Sri Lankan police departments collection and storage of these crime details are taken care of in a manual process of entering in books which has both long-term and short-term processes. Therefore, it would take time and effort to note down each criminal activity paper-based. Another major issue faced is that with the data entry being a manual process, it would take a lot of effort and be ineffective to eliminate potential suspects by connecting a current crime to an existing one.
The goal of this research is to develop a criminal profiling system. This system's grave crime report and records component, which offers an IT solution for the police department, enables users to add, remove, and edit data. Due to this solution, the problem faced by police officers when solving a crime will be resolved as the new profiling system will link the new crime to an existing crime with a possible suspect list.
The list of requirements can be further examined through additional interviews and questionnaires with police officers. Having researched new utilities, such as adding witness descriptions, uploading pictures, and videos of the criminal activity, and voice cuts (potentially using a voice-to-text tool) can be used as real-time tracking to link the crime to the geographical location itself. A functionality such as a crime map could be added digitally for users to view a heat map of specific regions along with a specific crime type to identify areas of high and low criminal activity as a Prediction system using machine learning.
