Abstract

"The global book market has demonstrated resilience and growth amidst challenges, with revenue increases in most surveyed countries in 2023. This thesis delves into the difficulties readers face in managing personal libraries against this backdrop, highlighting the limitations of existing library applications and online marketplaces in meeting the diverse needs of readers. With the book market projected to reach USD 91.98 billion by 2024 and a reader base of 2.5 billion by 2029, the potential for innovation is significant. This research introduces “bibliotek”, a novel book management system designed to address these challenges. It features automated book entry through ISBN image processing, series continuation recommendations via machine learning, cost-effective access to books, and promotes a circular economy through book lifecycle management. The system also includes a streamlined review system and gamification elements to enhance user engagement. Despite its innovative approach, ""bibliotek"" faces limitations such as imperfect ISBN image processing, suboptimal machine learning model performance for book recommendations, and areas for improvement in data security and privacy. In summary, this thesis presents “bibliotek”, an innovative solution aimed at revolutionizing personal library management amidst a thriving global book market, promoting sustainability, affordability, and enhanced user engagement."
